iGuide2 : No Audio Track on my AVI

This is the single most common problem with AVI files. It is usually quite simple to resolve :

FIX : You need the Nimo Codec pack. Download, Install and try again.

AVI's use a video and audio codec in order to play. It is often incorrectly assumed it is a single codec and that if you can see the Video it is working. The Nimo codec pack contains all of the most common codecs. In general it will resolve most common problems with Audio and Video codecs (by installing them).

My AVI has Audio, but TMPGENC does not work
The audio on my MPG drifts from the video
ARGHHH!! Still No Audio on my AVI
My .wav file has no audio now!!
I have the correct audio Codec, still no audio

My AVI has Audio, but TMPGENC does not work
or The audio on my MPG drifts from the video

This also a quite common problem. Many versions of TMPGENC (this was the case at the time of writing this) struggle with several of the audio codecs contained in the Nimo Codec pack. This means you can play your AVI, but the MPG is produced with no Audio. This however is easily resolved :

FIX : You need to give TMPGENC a .wav file rather than the AVI as an audio source.

Step 1 : Download and install VirtualDub.

This is a simply fantastic tool, in my view one of the highest quality open source tools I have ever seen.

Step 2 : Run VirtualDub, File>Open Video File.

If you have been following these steps because of audio drift, then you will probably receive a message stating the virtual dub has detected a +- difference between the audio track and the video, and that if this is unacceptable then to re encode using a constant bitrate. It is my understanding this happens when the audio track has been encoded as an MP3 and included alongside the video track (usually in these cases divx). This makes a very small file that will play in Media Player, but is not great for trying to produce VCD's from as there is no direct tie in between the Video and the Audio, they simply play for similar lengths of time.

Whatever the case you want to produce a WAV file.

Step 3 : File> Save Wav... and Enter File Name.

Then use the .WAV File for the audio file where the big red arrow points.:

Continue to produce your MPG as normal. It should now both have audio and be in synch with the video. (* Note it is quite possible there will be a little drift still from the encoded AVI, but this should be better than simply encoding the AVI).

ARGHHH!! Still No Audio on my AVI
or My .wav file has no audio now!!

This is more unusual, but again not unknown. It is possible that the AVI you are using is using an Audio codec that is not "common" enough to be either installed with Windows or in the Nimo Codec pack. There are many ways that can be used to determine the Audio codecs, but in my view :

FIX : Download and install g-Spot in order to determine the correct audio codec.

Load your AVI into g-Spot and the screen should look as shown

simply take the name of the audio codec and using your favourite web browser search for the relevant codec and install it. If you have the codec installed that the AVI is using then you will get audio. When you have audio you can either encode directly or export to a wav file (as described above).

I have the correct audio Codec, still no audio

If you definitely have the correct audio codec installed and you still have no audio on your AVI's and the file length of the AVI is correct (see File Box in g-spot above) then you are running out of options. If other AVI's play fine (video and audio) then you may want to consider trying to repair your Media Player and if that fails you should look at getting the AVI again from a different source.
